Bassett progress in Wiltshire Junior Cup

The Town were the visitors to Corsham Town on Saturday in the second round of the Wilts Junior Cup Competition and did more than was expected of them in winning by 5 goals to 4. Immediately after the kick-off Selman received the ball on the right and got away to give Wootton Bassett the lead. Compton scored a second goal five minutes later. Baker reduced the arrears, but before half-time Sandell headed in from a well-placed corner by Selman.

The second half found the home team striving hard, and within seven minutes Wright and Baker (from a penalty) had brought the scores level. Both sides found it hard to gain the mastery, but neither defence would yield, and only ten minutes remained when M. Titcombe gave the visitors the lead. This was quietly surrendered when Stevens put Corsham on terms. It was in the last minute that Wootton Bassett gained the verdict through a goal scored by Chequers. Cup tie football was the order of the day, and Wootton Bassett just about deserved to win. As a token of respect to the late Lord Methuen who was president of the Corsham club, the officials, players and spectators stood in silence previous to the kick-off.

The Town will visit Horton and Coate (Devizes) tomorrow in the Calne and District match and the chosen side is: F. Emery; A.S. Beale and H. Clarke; E. Evans, E. Tull and A. Compton; F. Selman, L.W. Chequers, M. Titcombe, S. Titcombe and W. Sandell.
