Bassett avenge defeat in season opener against Robins

Bassett gained revenge for their defeat in the opening league fixture of the season. Bassett went into the match without regular players Simon Anderton (goalkeeper), Callum Snooks and captain Sean Toomey but performed exceptionally well without them. Josh Dimond took over in goal for Bassett and had a terrific game as Bassett secured their second clean sheet of the season. Bassett took the lead midway through the first half when the Robins goalkeeper deflected a powerful Robert Leighfield shot into the path of Stuart Smedley who knocked the ball into the empty net with his knee. Bassett went further in front when the same player scored, again with his knee, following excellent play from Nathan Douglas. Bassett played some fine passing football and deserved to be two goals in front at the interval.

In the second half, fine defending from Daniel Strange, Tom Marchment, Phillip Forster and George Drewitt ensured the home side did not get back into the match. Bassett extended their lead with a well taken goal from Dean Wason, playing only his second league match of the season. Next week Bassett entertain Malmesbury at Rylands Way. Malmesbury will obviously be keen to avenge their only defeat of the season so far, Bassett winning the earlier fixture at Malmesbury by 3 goals to 2.
