Final score line flatters Bassett

This match was a lot closer than the final score line would suggest. In the first half there was very little between the two sides and the football played by both sides was of a high standard. The closest Bassett came to scoring was two efforts from Stuart Smedley which were both cleared off the line. Simon Anderton, meanwhile, in the Bassett goal, dealt comfortably with any Cirencester attacks. At half time the match remained without a goal from either side.

Bassett continued the second half where they had left off playing football of a high standard. Bassett finally broke the deadlock when Philip Forster scored after a goalmouth scramble. Bassett extended their lead when Robert Leighfield hit a powerful shot past the whole of the Cirencester defensive wall, following an indirect free kick conceded by the Cirencester keeper. This goal seemed to inspire the Bassett side who began to open up their opponents with some excellent passing moves with captain Sean Toomey involved in much of Bassett's play. It was fitting that he should score the third after a tremendous run down the left flank. Nathan Douglas fired in a fourth with a powerful chip over the Cirencester keeper and Robert Leighfield added a fifth direct from a corner which just crossed the line before the Cirencester keeper could get both hands on the ball. In the end a comprehensive win for Bassett but special mention for the visitors who played so well in the first half and were an extremely sporting side both on and off the field.
