Bassett win 5-1 against a stubborn Malmesbury

After 3 weeks of not playing in the league Bassett found it hard going at times against a stubborn Malmesbury team. In the heat of nearly 85 degrees the players of both teams worked really hard to cancel each one out on a very small pitch and extremely small goals, it did not help with the grass not being cut this year except for where the lines were around the pitch and the goal area markings.

Bassett started off fairly well but we asked the ball to be played down the wings today not straight down the middle, but before we even knew it the ball was going straight down the middle and it was easy pickings for the Malmesbury defence and goalie.

In the 1st half some of the team was slow and sluggish, and at times was not challenging for the ball and invited the opposition to advance and when they needed to they tried to tackle them and break, but as I said more often than not the ball went straight down the middle and again was easy for the home defence and keeper. Nashie heading the ball well today, played a good game and with Josh and Danny playing on the wings when given the chance gave the home defence something to think about.

The forwards of Jake, Callum and Jonathan played really well today especially in the 2nd half and the words of advice we gave them and the team at half time paid off and it was good to see them all listen. The 1st goal came the way of good battling by Josh who then toe punted the ball from one side to the other side of the pitch for Jonathan to run on to and crossed a perfect ball for Jack who was in the right position to fire our official 1st goal in to make it 1 nil, It was the first time we played the ball out to the wings and we scored from it.

Soon after that, the half time whistle blew and the lads came in for a good drink and a chat to try and improve on their score and playing side. 2nd half kicked off and within a couple of minutes Malmesbury scored a belter of a goal which in turn gave them some confidence, but Bassett soon stopped them in there tracks with good passing football and soon another goal came our way. Bassett started to pass the ball round and started to do flick ons from throw ins and balls pumped up field with knocks ons for the midfield and strikers to pounce on and this style of football really paid off for us. As the game went on this was the story of the 2nd half much better, good football, fighting for the 1st and 2nd ball, this was good to see from the boys and especially in this heat.

Good finishing by Jack, Callum, Jake and Jonathan but a good team effort in the 2nd half.

Overall, in this heat an ok first half but stepped up in the 2nd half and played really well.

Well done again boys, Ferndale next week lets concentrate and stay focused.
