Fast start proves futile as Fields fight back for victory

Allpay Park, 15 January 2022

For the second week in a row, Royal Wootton Bassett Town returned home empty-handed from a visit to Hereford as Sam Collier's side fell to a 3-1 defeat against promotion challengers Westfields.

Bassett made the perfect possible start to the game when John Mills found the net against his former club in just the fourth minute, the forward producing a good finish after Bailey Gallagher had steered a dangerous pass into the box.

The visitors then proceeded to frustrate Westfields, who were slow out of the blocks. It was backs against the walls stuff from Bassett for a long period, but time and again their solid defensive shape did not buckle, much to the hosts' anguish.

Eventually, however, Westfields found a way through, scoring an equaliser in the final minute of the half courtesy of Josh Hunt, who slotted home after a Jamie Bird pass.

Westfields proceeded to turn the screw in the second half.

Again though, Bassett initially held firm. But their resistance was broken with twenty minutes to go when Bird fired in from 25 yards to give Westfields the lead.

Cawley Cox then sealed matters in the final minute, latching onto a Hunt pass before coolly finishing beyond Eddie Cavanagh.
