Dodson stoops late to salvage point

Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 14 August 2021

Macauley Dodson's header deep into stoppage time rescued a point for Royal Wootton Bassett Town as they shared four goals with Chipping Sodbury Town in an entertaining, albeit at times, untidy encounter at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground.

Bassett appeared on the verge of a second home league defeat this week as, despite having taken the lead through Tom Moore, the visitors had staked out what appeared to be a winning position.

But with seemingly more than the planned amount of injury time played, debutant full back Khedive McIntosh worked a give-and-go with Gio Wrona from a throw in on the left side and delivered a towering cross to the far post where an unmarked Dodson raced to the edge of the six-yard box and guided a looping header over Chipping Sodbury shotstopper Josh Langley and into the far corner.

It was something of a smash-and-grab point – but one Bassett will certainly take given the position they found themselves in.

Sam Collier's side had gone ahead nine minutes before the break. The hosts took advantage of a poor mistake from the visitors as Abdoulie Tunkara passed straight to home forward Alan Griffin deep into his own half.

But it took a moment of real quality to eventually deliver the goal. Griffin immediately played a through ball, which Moore latched onto on the right edge of the box. He skipped past an onrushing Langley, but that narrowed his angle further. Yet the impressive youngster was somehow able to steer the ball into the net from the acutest of angles with his right foot.

That lead would not last long though.

Kye Simpson hit the post moments after Moore's opener, before the Sods pulled level on the stroke of half time through Lewis Bezer following a neat move.

They then went ahead ten minutes into the second half when Simpson converted from an Aysa Corrick cross.

Try as they might, Bassett did not look as though they would equalise. That was until defender Dodson rose to meet fellow full back McIntosh's perfect late delivery.
