Alex Green fired four goals on a red letter day for him and his Wootton Bassett Town teammates as they strolled to an 8-0 victory against struggling Oxford City Nomads.

It was a day of high scoring in the Hellenic Premier Division, with Abingdon Town also triumphing by the same margin in their 9-1 demolition job of Pegasus Juniors, as a combined total of 56 goals were scored in the 11 scheduled games.

After shipping seven midweek against Ascot United, the Nomads' confidence was unsurprisingly low going into the match at Court Place Farm, and Bassett took full advantage.

The deadlock was broken with only quarter of an hour gone through Ethan Delaney, who scored his first competitive goal in Bassett colours. Green then scored twice, either side of a Terry Adams strike, to ensure the game was finished as a contest by the break.

The ex-Shrivenham striker and his side were not done though. Sam Collier opened his league account for the year on the hour before Green completed his hat-trick.

Goals continued to come from all-comers with James Turner - in his first start of the campaign - bagging the seventh. Fittingly though the final goal of the game fell to man of the match Green.

Although just two games have been played, Dave Turner will be delighted with the unbeaten start his side have made to the year. And the second successive league clean sheet means Bassett are the only remaining team in the Hellenic Premier Division yet to concede.

However a tough test awaits on Tuesday night when Old Woodstock Town visit Rylands Way. They themselves have began the year in free scoring fashion, having netted eleven in three games, including five in their most recent fixture against Wokingham & Emmbrook. Yet, Bassett will be buoyed by the fact their defence has been somewhat error prone in the early stages as they have so far shipped nine goals.
