After going the distance against a plucky Bicester Town side in their Hellenic League Challenge Cup third round encounter, Wootton Bassett Town prevailed 3-0 on penalty kicks to book a trip to Flackwell Heath in the quarter finals of the competition. The two sides could not be seperated for 120 minutes, extra time finishing with the scores level at 2-2.
It was not the marathon contest manager Dave Turner and his charges would have preferred, especially with a key trip to Carterton looming on Saturday. But the result, ensuring that Bassett still have a shot at silverware this year, is all that matters.
However, it could have all been over inside normal time as the visitors looked to be on the verge of victory in the dying stages of the game. Yet a Sam Packer equaliser - his first goal for Bassett - with just three minutes remaining ensured an extra half hour was required.
Alex Green netted for the home side in extra time, but was let down by his defence who failed to keep their Division One West visitors out, meaning the tie went to penalties.
From the spot though, Bassett had few problems. Sam Collier, James Turner and Luke Sharps all found the back of the net from twelve yards, while Bicester squandered their first three penalties to finally draw a long, eventful evening to a close.
