Hopes Dashed by Quickfire Binfield Double

Rylands Way, 29th March 2011

It was not one of the final ten games of Wootton Bassett Town's, which would have been circled as one where points were a possibility. Yet, at half time against Binfield, Bassett were well in the game with Alex Green having cancelled out an early goal for the visitors. But two goals in quick succession following the restart condemned Bassett to a third consecutive defeat, the game ultimately finishing 3-1 in the title chasing Berkshire side's favour.

When Carl Davies gave the visitors the lead shortly after the game began, those in attendance could have been forgiven thinking that it was the beginning of another blowout loss. But a resilient display, coupled with Green's equaliser, raised hopes that perhaps something could be gained from this game.

But first Jack Tallentire and then James Partridge exposed the hosts' frailties to put the result beyound doubt with more than a quarter of the game still to go.

Losses for both Bracknell Town and Witney United - the latter meet Bassett next week in a crucial six-pointer - softened the blow. Saturday sees Dave Turner's side host Slimbridge. It was around this time a year ago that the two sides met at Rylands Way, with a 2-1 win for Bassett going a long way to ignite their run to second place in Division One West. Here's hoping that the spirit of that afternoon can be recreated to help further the team's hopes of avoiding an immediate return to that division.
