Carter Accounts for Carterton

Rylands Way, 8th February 2010

A late Shaun Carter goal sealed a vital three points for Wootton Bassett Town as they defeated fellow strugglers Carterton by a solitary goal in a crucial match for Dave Turner's side.

Prior to kick-off seven points seperated the two sides, with Bassett holding a pair of games in hand, meaning that a negative result for the hosts would have dragged them well and truly into a scrap for Hellenic Premier Division survival.

Bassett had much the better of the first half but could not put their numerous chances away. And it looked as though they would be punished for their profligacy in front of the goal until Carter - more used to preventing goals at the other end of the pitch - struck for the second time this season.

The win lifts Bassett into 15th after Reading Town lost by the odd goal in five to Witney United. And with games in hand still in their pocket as well as a relatively healthy points gap between themselves and the bottom four, now is the time for Turner's team to up the ante and keep pulling away from the danger zone.
