Rejuvenated Bassett Frustrate Kiddy

Yarnton Road, 9th April 2011

Buoyed by their comeback victory against fellow strugglers Witney United in midweek, Wootton Bassett Town pulled off a surprise, holding high-flyers Kidlington to a 1-1 draw at Yarnton Road.

Having expended so much energy in the second period of Tuesday's controversial, topsy-turvy encounter, it could have been expected that Dave Turner's side would come out flat. But that was not the case as Bassett frustrated their opponents, who at the beginning of the afternoon still had an outside chance of a top two finish in the Hellenic Premier Division.

Aggrieved at being denied what they felt was a penalty in the first half - the referee instead awarding a free kick, the hosts' misfortune continued when Sam Packer gave Bassett the lead on the hour mark. Eight minutes later, Jimmy Deabill steered a Ryan Curtin cross past Stewart Thompson to level the match to claim his side a point.

The point earned was even sweeter thanks to defeats for both Witney and Carterton, while it leaves Bassett capable of leaping from 17th to as high as 13th place should they earn positive results from their remaining games in hand over the teams immediately above them. To do just that will be a hard task though, with Ascot United and title chasing Wantage Town next up.
