Collier Hat-Trick Not Enough

Meadow Lane, 9th October 2010

Westbury United exacted revenge over Wootton Bassett Town for defeat in last year's FA Cup by triumphing by the odd goal in seven in the opening round of the Wiltshire Senior Cup. Defeat for Bassett means they have been eliminated from three competitions in the past week, with two of those defeats coming against lower-ranked opposition.

It was a deserved win for the Western League Division One side, who haven't made the best of starts to their league campaign, as they were in command for the majority of the game, with Dave Turner's team underwhelming.

As per last week at Cadbury Heath, the hosts took an early first half lead before a stunning volley shortly after the restart doubled their advantage. Westbury were then reduced to ten men, but this did little to halt them in their tracks as they added a third from the spot.

Staring straight at a comprehensive defeat, Bassett whipped themselves into shape and Sam Collier's pair made sure of a fast and furious finish. However, with the visitors throwing all caution to the wind to grab an equaliser, Westbury added a fourth on the break.

The Bassett frontman, whose goals the team have been relying on heavily in recent weeks, then added his third, but it was not enough.

Bassett now have an interest in just one competition other than the Hellenic Premier Division, that being the Bluefin Insurance Brokers Challenge Cup. It was the second conseuctive year that defeat has been tasted in the opening round of the county competition, meaning the club's run without reaching its final has now been stretched to a decade.
