Witney Struggle Past Experimental Bassett Side

Rylands Way, 5th October 2010

A near full strength Witney United struggled their way to a 1-0 victory against an experimental Wootton Bassett Town side in their Hellenic League Floodlit Cup second round fixture.

With the competition low down on his list of priorities, manager Dave Turner used the occasion to give a large number of first team regulars the chance to recharge their batteries after a hectic start to the season, with the side put out having an unfamiliar look to it. But with the performance they put in, those selected are sure to have given the Bassett boss some selection headaches in the coming weeks.

The winning goal came with twenty minutes remaining courtesy of Sam Wright after a rare opening for the Blanketmen, who have had a disappointing start to their league campaign. Bassett meanwhile created a plethora of chances but were just unable to supply the required finish.

Turner's team face more cup action on Saturday when they journey to Western League Division One outfit Westbury United in the opening round of the Wiltshire Senior Cup.
