Rarely did Wootton Bassett Town break a sweat in their comfortable 4-0 FA Vase Second Qualifying round triumph against Wiltshire rivals Devizes Town as Matty Bown's brace inspired his side to victory.
The triumph means Dave Turner becomes the first manager in Bassett history to have twice guided his side to the First Round proper of the national competition for clubs at step five of the Non League pyramid and below. And the reward for doing so is a trip to Bristol-based Cadbury Heath, who stunned free-scoring Ardley United 3-0.
Despite the convincing nature of the scoreline, this was not at all a vintage display from Bassett. Seemingly suffering from an FA Cup hangover after the midweek defeat to Hamble ASSC, they played to their opponents level for much of the opening period, and could only muster the one goal before the break, with Bown grabbing it on three minutes as he smashed the ball into the top corner from 25 yards.
But the visitors showed they were made of much sterner material in the second half by firing three goals without reply past the Western League Division One strugglers, who going into the match had shipped four or more in four of their seven league games; incidentally, in their recent fixture with Cadbury Heath they were thumped 9-2!
Alex Green got the ball rolling, netting shortly after the restart, heading home a corner for his first goal in six games. Bassett's lead was later further increased by Sam Collier, who scored his fifth goal in cup competitions so far this campaign with a fine solo effort, before Bown wrapped up the scoring just before the end following a flowing move.
Much tougher tests undoubtedly lie ahead, beginning with the visit Tuesday of Kidlington, which if the last time the two teams met is anything to go by, should be more of a classic than this visit to a fading Wiltshire non-league giant.
