Rylands Way, 15th January 2011
Wootton Bassett Town fell to their fourth defeat in five games as visiting Thame United secured victory by the narrowest of margins, triumphing 1-0.
It was the first ever meeting between the two sides, and both teams were evenly matched. The only goal of the game though came in the opening fifteen minutes, with the prolific Alex Stewart netting his 14th league goal in his 14th league appearance this season.
Defeat means that Dave Turner's side have taken just one point from their last five league games, a spell during which just two goals have been scored. Therefore the next two matches against two sides below Bassett in the table, Carterton and bottom side Fairford Town, are of the utmost importance. Unless a decent haul of points is taken from that pair of matches, the Rylands Way outfit will find themselves in the midst of the brewing relegation dogfight, a scenario that did not seem likely given the side's early season form.
With Carterton, Bracknell Town and Witney United all gaining points too, the gap between Bassett and the relegation zone now stands at just three points. Fortunately, games in hand are still held over those teams, but it's a must that points are picked up in those.
