Nomads Exact Revenge

Rylands Way, 2nd November 2010

After taking a step forward with an impressive victory against Flackwell Heath on Saturday, Wootton Bassett Town immediately went a couple back following a humbling 5-2 defeat to Oxford City Nomads.

For the visitors it was not only revenge for an 8-0 reverse at the hands of Dave Turner's side at the beginning of the season, but also allowed them to further bridge the gap between themselves, lingering in a precarious position before play, and current mid-table sides like Bassett.

Now just a solitary point seperates the two sides. And although Bassett hold three games in hand over the Nomads (and the majority of other teams below them), they'll mean nothing unless points - as opposed to beatings - are taken from games like this.

The Nomads raced into a 4-1 half time lead, with Bassett unable to keep pace despite Sam Collier's penalty.

That meant Oxford City could take the foot off the gas following the restart. And Bassett would no doubt have wished it was only the second half that counted towards the final score as both sides managed a single goal each. For the hosts, Sean Bailey was on target for his first of the season.

Not much time should be spent dwelling on such a loss though. If that occurs then trouble could well lie ahead in the coming weeks with a number of matches coming up against those below Bassett, beginning with Saturday's trip to local rivals Shrivenham.
