Can't Stop the Rot

Wilks Park, 23rd April 2011

It's now four defeats on the trot for Wootton Bassett Town after they were comfortably beaten 4-0 by Flackwell Heath in the penultimate game of the season. It was by no means as bad a performance as the final score suggests, but a combination of error, bad luck and the hosts' clinical finishing did for Bassett.

Just a goal seperated the sides at the break before a Craig Bowden own goal following a Stewart Thompson spill doubled the home side's advantage.

Bassett did not give up the ghost though. Firstly, Tom Dingle had the ball in the back of the net but had his effort ruled out after being marginally offside. Sam Collier then missed when he should really have scored following a great Matty Bown ball before Richie Carter blazed narrowly over the bar.

The game was then put beyond all doubt when Flackwell converted a questionable penalty before a fantastic strike made it four.

Dave Turner's side themselves had two fantastic shouts for penalties turned down on an afternoon where little went there way.

Still, there's one more opportunity to finish the season on a high when basement dwelling Pegasus Juniors travel to Rylands Way on Easter Monday.
