The Perfect Start

Old School Lane, 10th August 2010

The trip to Hereford was certainly more than worth it in the end. Wootton Bassett Town kicked off their season in perfect fashion, defeating Pegasus Juniors 2-0 as they returned to action in the Hellenic Premier Division.

It was the journey that the team were looking forward to getting out of the way, although - as manager Dave Turner mentioned to the press - they were seeking to make it with a sense of purpose rather than one of foreboding.

And that they did, producing a confident display to boot.

Pegasus are without doubt more comfortable when playing at home, having won just two on the road compared to eleven at Old School Lane last season. Yet, Bassett were the team who were quickest to acclimatise to the new campaign , Ryan Banks, captain of the team - a position which he has more than merited thanks to his ever consistent performances during his time at Rylands Way - opening his account with half-time dawning.

Alex Green – a forward, who much will be expected from over the coming months on account of his previous proficiency in front of goal at step five - then doubled the lead midway through the second period to seal the first three points of the year.

The clean sheet added an extra sense of gloss to the evening, especially so given the fact three of those in the line of fire for the visitors – Jon Beeden, Liam Edmondson and Craig Bowden – are still learning the ropes when it comes to Hellenic League football.

Victory gives Bassett the confidence boost they need heading into Saturday's FA Cup clash against Wiltshire rivals Bradford Town, who themselves had an impressive victory this evening as they triumphed 3-1 against potential opponents in the next round of the competition, Almondsbury UWE.
