Bassett well beaten by title chasing Westbury

A heavy storm of rain just before the kick-off made the pitch slippery for the players, and in these conditions the United's passing was far too much for the visiting defence. Westbury had to make three change in the selected side, Sims, Adlam and Mortimer taking the places of Butcher, Mizen and Grist, but they were not unduly extended to obtain the points. Outstanding in the Wootton Bassett team was Waite in goal, whilst Perry and Embling were a dangerous right wing. The play was interesting in the first half with the home forwards playing brilliant football. After the interval, however. Westbury relaxed their efforts, and the exchanges were very quiet.

Beasley shot outside from a good position for Wootton Bassett from the kick-off, but the United were quickly attacking, and Pearce pushed the ball through for Butler to net the opening goal. In a strange position at outside right Adlam played cleverly, and the home forwards gave the opposing defenders plenty of employment. Lawrence obtained a second goal for Westbury, with a shot that was diverted into the net by a defender, and Pearce came along with a third that hit the upright before passing Waite. The visiting 'keeper made brilliant saves from Butler and Pearce, but he was beaten again before the interval by Butler to give the United a 4-0 lead.

Westbury were content to hold their lead in the second half, although Butler hit the crossbar with a hard drive after a good run through, and this gave the visiting forward line more opportunity. Embling worked hard on the right, but the inside forwards were slow to seize their chances in front of goal. Following neat work by Pearce and Jones, Mortimer came in to easily beat Waite, and in goalmouth struggle Butler sent the leather home for sixth goal. Just before the end Embling a gave Kinder no chance with a first-time shot to reduce the visitors' arrears.
