Bassett beaten by Melksham on return to Wiltshire League

Wootton Bassett Town, who returned to Wiltshire League (Div. 2) football on Saturday after a lapse of nearly 30 years, were unfortunate in having to take the field without F.C.W. Dury and W.C.H. Webb. The deputies did very well, and with more experience better results may be anticipated. Melksham won by 5 goals to 1.

During the first half play was fairly even, and although Melksham took the lead through Webb, at the end of 15 minutes the Town were unlucky to be behind at the interval. Only lack of co-operation in the forward line kept them from equalising.

During the second half the Town had quite a fair share of the play but could not get the ball into the net. Their opponents added further goals through Riddick (3) and Petty, but easily the best goal of the match was obtained by Gleed (for Wootton Bassett) in the closing minutes.

Wootton Bassett Town receive a visit from Chippenham Rovers in the Wilts League tomorrow, and the selected side is: C.R. Waite; J.C. Titcombe, F.C.W. Drury; H.H. Page, W. Hawson, J.G. Fry; F. Childs, H. Clark, R.W. Brown, S. Gleed, E.T. Pearce. Reserve – R. Beazley.
