Bassett lose narrowly at Warminster

It was by no means a polished performance which gained for Warminster their first victory of this season in the Wiltshire League, when they had Wootton Bassett as visitors on Saturday last.

During early pressure by Warminster, Morgan and Burt both had shots deflected round the post for corners, but after ten minutes Wootton Bassett sprang a surprise when Beazley raced down the left wing and easily beat Field, the young Warminster goalkeeper, with a grand shot. A nice movement initiated by Drew found Warminster again on the attack, and after good work by Morgan and Burt, Len Smith shot over the Wootton Bassett crossbar. Both goals were threatened in subsequent exchanges, and the Wootton Bassett goal had a miraculous escape when Morgan had a lovely shot obstructed on the goal-line. Warminster met with success shortly before the interval, when Burt broke away on the right and put over a splendid shot which gave Arthurs no chance.

End-to-end play characterised the early part of the second half, and Warminster took the lead when Burt put over a well-placed pass from the right wing for Drew to convert. Shortly afterwards Warminster went further ahead, Drew again being the responsible player, but Wootton Basset pluckily fought back and Smith reduced the arrears.

Teams:

Warminster - Field; Curtis and Long: Turner, T, Burt and Withey: Knight, Len Smith, Morgan, Shane and Drew.

Wootton Bassett - Arthurs: Page and Drury; Brown, Clark and Fry: Childs, Smith, Embling. Bull and Beazley.
