Wootton Bassett Get Four Goals At Devizes But Lose!

The Football Pink, Saturday 3rd October 1936

The League Champions have shown a liking for goals this season, their three league games to date having yielded them 19.

They improved upon their average with Wootton Bassett as their victims, and would easily have reached double figures but for a heroic display by Waite in the Bassett goal.

The visitors to Quakers Walk, who have rejoined the senior ranks after a lapse of some 30 years, have averaged a point per match in their three league outings, and no doubt they were quite well satisfied to get four goals into the Devizes net. Four goals will win a good many matches.

The first half saw two evenly matched sides. The Champions got a two goals lead, only for the Wootton Bassett men to get on terms, and it was through the medium of a penalty for hands that the home side led by a solitary goal at the interval.

In the second half Devizes got on top, even though when they quickly popped on two more, Wootton Bassett came again and got another. Again Devizes scored, and so did Bassett, but they were unable to reply to the Town's last two.

Though they were beaten by eight goals to four, the League newcomers were far from disgraced.

The Evening Advertiser, Monday 28th September 1936

Devizes had the services of Sgt. W. Brown, the Army player, against Wootton Bassett who had to make three changes.

The Town went ahead after 15 minutes, Brown scoring from a corner, while the same player scored the second goal five minutes later.

Wootton Bassett reduced the arrears after half an hour, Beazley scoring from Child's centre.

Even play followed but in another breakaway Embling put the visitors on level terms. Right on the interval Devizes were awarded a penalty which was converted by Barr.

High scoring continued in the second half. Brown, Barr (penalty) and Abrahams added quick goals for the home team, while J. Fry replied for Wootton Bassett. A good move by Phillip sent Brown away and the centre forward scored another goal. Right on time Barr scored again from a penalty.
