Bassett end the season with a friendly defeat

This week's match was played against Highworth Juniors at Ballards Ash and the aim was for us to try and put our disappointing result against Lydiard behind us and bounce straight back, although we knew this was going to be a tough call as Highworth were coming into this game on a 14 match unbeaten run with our team being the last team to beat them way back in October.

Highworth kicked off and straight away put us on the back foot and this was to be the story for most of the game as we struggled to put any sort of attacking move together. So it was no surprise when they opened the scoring after Bassett failed to clear the ball out of the danger area.

At half time we tried to encourage the lads to work harder and track back more and to be stronger in the tackles as well as getting the passing going. For the first five minutes of the second half there was a slight improvement and this resulted in us winning a free kick on the edge of the Highworth penalty area. This was perfect striking distance for Scott who scored with one of his trademark dead ball kicks. Normally we would have got a lift from this and pushed on to win the game but it wasn't to be today and we sat back and let the opposition score twice more to make the final score 3-1 to Highworth.

From the first whistle it was obvious that we weren't up for this match and as had happened earlier in the season we seem to be so used to winning that when we lose a game it knocks us for six and it's a real struggle to get the players to work hard again and believe in themselves. Our tackling, passing, tracking back and support play was poor today and this is disappointing, but we can't win every game and this is a good lesson learned as the players will now realise that you only get results if you are prepared to work hard and hopefully we will lift ourselves for the next match. MOTM today goes to Scott who battled well and also scored a great goal.
