Best performance ever in first league fixture of the season

Stratton Juniors were our opponents today for what was our first League game of the new season. After playing well in our pre season friendly matches we were looking to carry this good form into the league.

Wootton Bassett started the stronger right from the kick off and we made sure we were first into every tackle ensuring we took early control of the game. Some good passing throughout the team resulted in a few good chances and before long we took the lead, Oliver received the ball on the left and picked out Joshua who finished well with a powerful shot. Bassett then went two up courtesy of a great long range strike from Scott Lees. The third goal came after a good move involving Oliver, Keir and Max ended with the keeper making a good save, Max then had another shot saved but Oliver was on hand to score from the rebound. It was now Stratton's turn to try to force the play but Mitchell and Scott stayed focused and defended well refusing to let them through. Then just before half time Scott found Josh with a throw in, he beat a player and played the ball to Oliver who made it 4-0 to Bassett with a great finish.

At half time we changed things around and brought Kalum and Martin on for Keir and Max. This change probably upset our rhythm for a short while and along with the wind now being against us it resulted in Stratton pulling a goal back and they probably could have scored again if it hadn't been for some brilliant goalkeeping from Reuben. Martin who had missed most of the pre season slotted straight back in and looked very impressive with some good strong and well timed challenges. As the second half went on we managed to get back into our stride again and started to push for another goal, again it was a great passing move which ended with Josh setting up Kalem who took his chance well to make the final score 5-1 to Bassett.

This was easily the best performance this team has ever put in and at the moment we seem to be getting better and better with each game we play, but we must be careful not to become over confident as we are in a very strong league this season. We now have nine very good players and although this creates its own problems with team selection it is good to know that when we make changes we can do so without weakening the team as we now have quality in every position.
