Slow start but Bassett come back but fall just short

Today's match was against Swindon Soccer Skills who we knew were one of the strongest teams in our division and it was important to play well this week and show that we can compete with the best teams.

The match kicked off and we soon found ourselves under severe pressure which resulted in Bassett going 2-0 down within the first 5 minutes. This stunned us a bit but we managed to drag ourselves back into the game and create a few decent chances of our own, Scott and Max hit shots just wide and Josh and Kalum both forced good saves out of the SSS goalkeeper, had we made these chances count things could have been different but SSS then showed us how to finish with another clinical goal to send us into half time 3-0 down and feeling pretty dejected.

During the interval we asked the players to tighten up and be a little stronger in the tackle as we found ourselves constantly outnumbered in defence with our midfield and forwards struggling to get back and help. This was making it easy for SSS and if we could defend and attack more as a unit instead of leaving big gaps in the centre this would help us force the play a little more.

We started the second half a lot more positively and within a few minutes both Josh and Kalum had hit the woodwork before Josh's cross from the right found Kalum who made no mistake with a good finish, 3-1. Then five minutes later we continued with our comeback when Oliver's shot was blocked but Kalum was on hand to score with the follow up after the keeper couldn't keep hold of the ball. Bassett were now on the ascendancy and this forced SSS to make a number of changes to try and hold onto their lead, but all credit to our lads who kept pushing for the equaliser, a good move involving Kalum, Josh and Ollie ended with another shot going just wide and then in the dying minutes Josh hit the bar yet again, this was to be our last chance as we eventually ran out of time.

For the second match in a row we started too slowly and didn't get going until we were behind, we may get away with this against weaker teams but against the likes of Lydiard and SSS it leaves us with too much of a mountain to climb. But on the positive side we never gave up and again kept going right up to the final whistle.
