Bassett not at their best

There was no League Match this week so we kept ourselves going by playing a friendly against Abbey Meads who have only recently formed and are looking to join the league next season.

From the kick off Bassett looked the sharper of the two teams and Max went close, hitting the post after a good run down the right flank. Then a few minutes later Oliver received a fine pass from Keir and picked out Scott who made sure with a good accurate left foot shot, 1-0 to Bassett. With the deadlock broken we then went looking for more goals and Keir was unlucky not to score when his shot was saved but Ollie followed up well to score from the rebound. Then just before half time Keir did manage to get himself on the score sheet with a well taken finish which made it 3-0.

The second half was much the same as the first with Bassett again having the majority of the play and before long Ollie had made it four finishing well after another good run by Max created the chance. Next it was Josh's turn to score when he picked up a loose ball in the area and smashed it into the back of the net following some good work from Keir. Then with five minutes left Abbey Meads scored a well deserved consolation goal after working the ball well from one end of the pitch to the other. But it was Max who capped another good individual performance with the last goal to make the final score 6-1 to Bassett.

Although the result was good today our performance was a little lack lustre with most of the players guilty of strolling around and not playing with their usual grit and determination. This was probably down to the fact that we used this game to try a few different players in different positions and I think this may have upset our rhythm a little but it is important to see how players react when asked to play in a different role and it will also give us more options in the future. Abbey Meads are a newly formed team and found it hard today against a Bassett side that have been together for two years now but I'm sure that by next season they will have gained enough experience to compete with most teams as they do try to play good football and hopefully this will pay off for them.
