Bassett crash out of the cup to Chippenham Town

Wootton Bassett were knocked out of the Cup by Chippenham but in the process probably learnt a couple of important lessons.

The game was very even through-out, may-be 60/40 in Bassetts favour but the result was determined by one key moment and some poor defending. In the first half Wootton Bassett laid siege to the Chippenham goal but resolute defending by the home side kept the scores level. Even with our superior possession the warning signs were their. With Chippenhams ability to play the ball in behind our defence and with the aid of the steep slope the home side caught us on the break. Tom Hammond made a great save but the ball went loose. The ball was knocked back across our goal and hit home.

At a goal down and playing down the hill during the second half it still looked good for Bassett but the wheel fell off when poor defending allowed Chippenham to score a cheap goal. Soon after we were dealt a severe blow when Harry Fitzwilliams was sent off for swearing, something that we can't allow to happen again. Young Harry was heartbroken but. We then went to pieces and five minutes of poor play made the score 4 – 0.

A few changes on the pitch made us more of a threat and we began to dominate again. This period of pressure lasted for the remaining 15 minutes and saw Ben Curtis score a great solo goal after running from the half way line.

4 – 1 was tough on Bassett but Chippenham defended better and when presented with opportunities took them.
