Wootton Bassett ended 2003 with a great win which sets us up nicely for our remaining league fixtures. The teams greater power and determination saw them through on a blustery day and on a very uneven pitch which had recently been well fertilized by the local dog community.

6-1 is s great result but given we had may-be 15 shots in the first half it could have been more comprehensive.

Playing the 1st half with the wind at their backs Bassett were very solid in defence, giving nothing away, and pushed forward with great effect creating chance after chance. It was a surprise that it took so long to make the break-through. Wroughton survived 15 minutes and a missed penalty before James Terry hit a thunderbolt into the net. Like buses three more goals came in quick succession, Harry Fitz, Brett Embling and Chris Edwards all hitting the target, and then just before the interval Harry scored again making it 5 – 0 at the break.

The second half was a different story. Playing into a stiff breeze was far more of a test but even so Wroughton rarely threatened. Too many times Bassett were caught off-side, quicker delivery of the ball would help. 20 minutes into the half Wroughton hit a through ball but our failure to knock the ball into touch allowed the Wroughton striker to shoot past the despairing Tom Hammond. Bassett picked up the pace and played some really good football. Chris Edwards in particular played very well and his refusal to give up resulted in the Wroughton Keeper bringing him down in the area. Harry Fitz didn't let a second opportunity go by and hit an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

Bassett saw out the remaining 5 minutes or so with no scares and celebrated a great xmas win accordingly.
