Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

After a wonderful win last week, this was a huge disappointment. Wootton Bassett turned up but decided not to play. Inside 30 seconds of the start we were 1 down and through-out the entire 1st half the team went from one calamity to another. It was a miracle that the score was only 2 – 0 at the interval, Shaw missing a penalty with the last kick of the half.

The second half began just the same and Shaw applied pressure and the Bassett defence caved in twice more to make the score 4 – 0 with 30 minutes remaining.

Bassett then changed things around, putting Ben Curtis at centre half and Chris Edwards up front with Harry Fitzwilliams. The team started to perform and from a Fitzwilliams corner kick James Terry connected with a sweat shot which the Shaw keeper stood no chance of stopping.

Ben Curtis made a huge difference to the defence, his constant marshalling and organization turned the tide and we began to threaten the Shaw goal. Harry & Chris were put through on several occasions, Harry had a one on one with the keeper which was kept out and Chris Edwards had an attempted lob saved. However Harry did manage to break through and his shot from just inside the area made the score 4 – 2.

If we could have given ourselves more time we would have clawed our way back but on reflection this was a thoroughly well deserved 4 – 2 defeat. Shaw were well organized, well disciplined and out fought us for the 1st 40 minutes. Bassett played well for 30 minutes and will need more of the same to beat Ferndale next Sunday.
