Big opening day win for Bassett Under 13's

Bassett under 13's produced a tremendous effort to totally dominate Liden who finished above us in the league last season.

With the influential Craig Kelly away on holiday and with Phil Barber 'retiring from football', some of the players had to fill in by playing in unfamiliar positions, but it was evident from the start that Bassett would be too strong for the home side.

With James Terry making his league debut the midfield worked well, creating chance after chance, only for the Ben Curtis and Harry Fitzwilliams to be caught off-side time and again. Then, completely against the run of play some awful defending allowed Liden to run through and take a shock 1 – 0 lead. This spurred us on and it wasn't long before Wootton Bassett levelled the scores and went in front with goals from Ben Curtis and Harry Fitzwilliams giving a 2 – 1 lead at the interval.

After the break the goals came at regular intervals, mostly all well crafted from excellent midfield play. Harry ended the match with a hat-trick, Ben Curtis got two, substitutes Joe Leedham and Andy Rolfe got one a piece and new Captain Brett Carr got the pick of the bunch, running with the ball from the half way line and slotting the ball past the despairing Liden keeper. Lidens second came from the penalty spot late in the game.

All the boys played there part in a comprehensive win, I would give a special mention to Craig Hunt who, playing at right back for the 1st time, was excellent.
