Bassett given a lesson in finishing

Bassett were given a good lesson in finishing in a game where if we had converted half of the chances that we created we would have been very hard to beat. For battling and sheer hard work we scored 11 out of 10 but fell well short in front of goal.

Bassett began well but after 15 minutes and a couple of mistakes we found ourselves 2 goals down. Tom Hammond unfortunately twisted a knee whilst diving for the ball and had to leave the pitch. Brett Embling went into goal and Tony Smith came off the bench into midfield. It was good play from a corner kick which Craig Kelly headed in to make the score 2 – 1 to Fairford at half time.

As in our recent league game against Fairford we had 50 – 60 % of the possession and generally looked comfortable in defence, but we failed to make the telling pass up front which would have opened them up.

After the interval Bassett managed to hold Fairford in their own half for long periods but poor ball retention allowed the home team to extend there lead to 4 – 1. Tony Smith scored a good debut goal to bring us close but with 3 minutes remaining Fairford scored a fifth goal to knock a spirited Bassett team out of the cup.
