Fast Corsham start blows Bassett away

Southbank, 27 November 2021

After an afternoon to remember came one to forget.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town endured a miserable afternoon as they suffered a convincing 3-0 defeat away against Corsham Town. Failing to adjust to the difficult conditions, Bassett allowed their hosts to take full advantage of having a strong wind behind them in the opening period as Corsham scored three times in the game's opening half hour.

From there, Corsham never looked back. And a difficult afternoon for Sam Collier's side only got worse after the restart when Alan Griffin was dismissed for allegedly kicking out at Nathan Davis - a dismissal that will likely render the veteran forward unavailable for Bassett's Buildbase FA Vase third round tie against Hamworthy United.

By that point the game was already beyond Bassett.

The hosts took the lead just after the quarter hour mark as Ryan Bath headed Matt Swan's raking cross down for the prolific Gary Higdon, who made no mistake with a simple sidefoot finish.

Chris Allen doubled Corsham's lead as he placed a fine free kick beyond Eddie Cavanagh into the bottom left corner.

And it was soon three as home 'keeper Rob Brown arrowed a long, wind-assisted kick forward to Higdon, whose expert control allowed him to find the space to pick out the bottom corner for his second of the match.

The result means Bassett's winless record against sides in the top half of this season's Hellenic League Permier Division stretches even further. They'll have another opportunity to finally break that duck next week though when Longlevens visit the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground.
