Cox bags a pair as Bassett see off Newbury

Corinium Stadium, 23rd April 2014

A Levi Cox brace helped Wootton Bassett Town to a 3-1 victory against Newbury, providing some breathing room in the face of local rivals Shrivenham's late run.

The forward struck early to put Bassett ahead, drilling Kyle Rigley's cross into the back of the net.

Newbury, troublesome opponents when the teams met back in December, were proving to be stubborn again and equalised late in the half as Kalief Madden took advantage of a defensive lapse to score from close range.

Parity did not last long however, Levi Cox thrashing a 25 yard effort in off the post.

With the lead, Bassett stepped things up after the break. They were rewarded for their good play midway through the period, though the third goal came as a gift from the visitors as they put through their own net in calamitous fashion.

It could have been four - and a hat trick for Cox - late on, but he failed to convert with the goal at his mercy.

He'll have time to go again and reach double figures for league goals. Bassett, meanwhile, moved within a point of ensuring they can't be overtaken by their near neighbours.
