Cup wait must go on

The Meadow, 17th April 2014

Wootton Bassett Town's hopes of a Supplementary Cup final appearance were dashed as substitute Karl Nash netted the only goal of the game for Brimscombe and Thrupp five minutes from time.

Scoring with his first touch of the game, Nash ensured Bassett's first team's silverware-less streak will extend beyond the already unlucky thirteen years without a trophy.

Tiredness seemed to be a factor in Bassett's less than convincing performance, the multitude of games in recent weeks taking their toll.

While Brimscombe were reduced to ten men prior to half time, dangerous forward Joe Tustain seeing red for foul and abusive language, Bassett could not take advantage of the extra man.

It was Brimscombe who consistently looked the likelier to score. And after the restart Bassett were thankful for a pair of stunning one-handed Steve Allison saves - the second keeping out a header from just five yards out.

Bassett then suffered a blow when Kyle Rigley was dismissed for venting his frustrations.

That eliminated any benefits gained from the earlier sending off, and Nash eventually delivered the final, telling blow.
