Stevens steers Bassett past Saracens

Corinium Stadium 5th March 2014

Striking quickly shortly after half time, Lee Stevens' lone goal was enough for Wootton Bassett Town to seal a 1-0 victory against Cheltenham Saracens.

Sent off a week and a half ago against Oxford City Nomads, Stevens more than redeemed himself for that transgression. Playing up front - the opposite end of the field to his natural position, he provided the decisive flick at the near post to a fine Ryan Stanners cross a minute after the restart.

After an uneventful first half, Bassett got the start that they wanted to the second. The better team overall, they could have won by a greater margin but for a few missed chances. Late on things got slightly complicated when Jordan Roberts harshly saw red. Yet a deserved three points were secured.

A vital win it was too. 15th place Cheltenham went into the night five points behind Bassett with four games in hand. But with three points, Jeff Roberts' team have extended that advantage, while also moving back above Bracknell Town and into 13th.

With eleven games to go and given the congested state of things in mid-table of the division, Bassett also have the chance to potentially chase a place in the top half. In recent weeks Roberts has spoken of his high ambitions for his team. Now is the time therefore for those players to demonstrate why their boss thinks that next year they could be a force to be reckoned with.
