Extra time heartbreak ensures County Cup woes continue

Corinium Stadium 7th December 2013

With just three appearances beyond the second round in their last eleven participations, Wootton Bassett Town were hoping this would be the year they finally saw their Wiltshire Senior Cup fortunes reverse. However, Bemerton Heath Harlequins put paid to any dreams of a possible tilt at County Cup glory, winning 3-2 after extra time in their second round clash with Bassett.

Bemerton won the game with a 115th minute goal, despite having to play the extra half hour with just ten men after a handball on the line had allowed Sam Collier to dramatically equalise in second half stoppage time.

On an eventful afternoon, that extra time hammer blow came an age after the game's first goal, which Levi Cox supplied for Bassett in the fourth minute.

By the break, however, the visitors were ahead, having levelled midway through the first half before nosing ahead six minutes before the half time whistle.

With time winding down it appeared as though Bassett would be headed out until the tide seemed to turn in their favour on 92 minutes.

Yet the extra man proved not to be as advantageous as one might have expected. Instead, it would be the Wessex League outfit who booked a date in the third round with Western League Division One runaway leaders Bradford Town.

For Bassett their ignominous recent record in this competition continues: not since 2008/09, when they reached the semi final, have they got beyond the second round. Arguably the best chance at laying some hands on some silverware for the first time since 2000/01 must wait another year.
