30 Sep 2012 - Highworth Town Juniors H (H)

Wootton Bassett Blue 4 - 2 Highworth After last weeks performance we really had to pick ourselves up massively for a game against Highworth who we know from past games are an excellent side. It started off slowly and Highworth should have taken the lead when a free kick was headed across goal and all that was needed was a tap in but but striker free in the box somehow didn't connect and the ball went wide. We became confident and were passing the ball well especially down the left side where Adam and Jack Holder were finding some room and attacking the spaces well. We won a corner and had our first chance when the same two played a quick one-two and Adam tried his luck from outside the box but shot over. Oliver and JT were managing to hold the two tricky attacking players at bay and were stopping any real chances at our goal. A loose ball then fell to Adam who was too strong in the tackle and played in Marshall who had a touch and rolled it to Nat who made no mistake and scored 1-0 up. We had a lot of luck for a few minutes when 2 Highworth corners left us uncomfortable in the area but we managed to scramble the ball away somehow with Josh and Oliver getting some big touches on the loose ball. On the break Adam again found Jack Holder who attacked down the side and when he seemed to run out of room by the touch line he managed to put his foot through the ball into the area where Nat pinched the ball and poked it into the goal to make it 2-0. Highworth then had a chance to get a goal back but Josh saved brilliantly to push the ball wide for a corner. Half Time and 2-0 up Highworth started strongly and had a chance with a cross/shot which ended up with a clearance off our own line that fell to the oncoming player but luckily was headed wide. Then a foul on halfway gave Highworth a chance to get the ball into the box but it was fired with great power and precision over everyone including Josh into the top corner and they were back in it at 2-1. We then had our backs against the wall for a while as they pushed on looking for an equalizer but again, Jamie, JT and Oliver held firm and stopped any clear chances, Jamie had come into the game in midfield after his paintballing activities last week with renewed strength and his usual quality on the ball and was working hard up and down the field. We attacked on the break and got another goal when Marshall received the ball from Jamie just inside the Highworth half and went on another run beating the defender and firing a powerful shot that went over the keeper and into the far corner to make it 3-1. But we went to sleep and Highworth scored an goal immediately after kick off. Three neat passes and the ball was played through to the striker showed great composure to go round Josh and roll it into the empty net. Highworth pushed on looking to get back into the game and a clearance left Oliver under pressure. He put his foot through the ball and it looped over midfield and the last defender. The ball fell nicely to Nat and with the keeper coming out to try and claim it, Nat showed great awareness to flick a back header over the keeper and into the net for his hat-trick and settled the match. Well played everyone!
