11 Sep 2012 - Hungerford Town Juniors (H)

We kicked off promptly and with 4 passes and 10 seconds gone we were 1-0 up. Straight from kick off Jack Holder laid it off to Adam who fed Marshall out wide. He sprinted forward and crossed into the box where Nat was waiting for a tap in!

But if the boys thought it was going to be easy they were wrong.

Hungerford were not deterred and came back into the game straight away with some neat passing. Some of the lads were ball watching and some skillful wide play by the Hungerford midfielder created some room for himself and he passed it to the unmarked forward in the box who had a cool finish to level the scores at 1-1.

A few minutes later and again some slack marking left the Hungerford player in space outside the box. With a couple of touches to compose himself, he fired a right foot curler into the top corner leaving Josh no chance and it was 2-1 to Hungerford.

The game then opened up with chances for both sides, Nat shooting wide from distance and a cross shot from JT just evaded Marshall at the far post. Hungerford attacked well and hit the outside of the post and also shot wide. Oliver was defending well, reading the game and was talking to the rest of the team which managed to keep them at bay apart from one further chance which hit our cross bar.

Nat then intercepted a goal kick and was just lining up a strike but a last ditch tackle put him off. From the corner, Nat got a touch on the volley with his left foot which hit a defender and went into the corner to equalize.

Again the game opened up and some half chances at both ends were not converted. Half time and scores were level at 2-2.

The second half turned into a bit of a battle, Adam and Ollie having a tough time with the strong Hungerford players. Both sides were tiring but there were still chances. A couple of great runs from Marshall just failing to find an end product and Hungerford had a header which hit the cross bar. The next goal was crucial and it came from a great Marshall run, beating 2 players he drove into the box where he could of squared it to Nat but he hit a powerful near post shot leaving the keeper no chance and we took the lead 3-2.

The rest of the game was a bit of a battle with some strong composed defending from Oliver and JT although we did ride our luck when pushing on too much. Marshall had one final chance from a lovely cross field pass by Jack Holder but his shot was saved by the keeper.

Hungerford played very well and deserved at least a draw having hit the woodwork 3 times so we can feel a little fortunate to pick up all 3 points tonight.

MOM tonight was Oliver for a great performance, some good organizing and controlled defending.
