Green Shoots to Spring Bassett Forward

Stones Lane, 31st March 2012

Wootton Bassett Town moved up into fourth place in Hellenic League Division One West as an Alex Green brace secured a 2-1 victory against Cricklade Town. The three points kept up the pressure on current occupiers of third place Winterbourne United, though the Gloucestershire side are still favourites to grab a promotion spot as they are six points ahead of Dave Turner's side.

The result means Bassett have done the double of their local rivals this season, which is no mean feat considering how stubborn Graham Jackson's have been against the Rylands Way outfit since entering the Hellenic League.

And they provided stern opposition again, taking the lead eleven minutes in when Aaron Webb netted his fifth goal of the campaign.

The home side appeared destined to take that one goal advantage into the break, but the veteran Green popped up to equalise two minutes before the referee's whistle.

Quickly out the blocks following the restart, Green scored the decisive goal of the game - his tenth league strike of the campaign - in the 50th minute. And some solid defending then prevented the home side taking anything from the match.

Three games now remain for Bassett - all at home, beginning next Saturday with the visit of Cirencester Town Development. Should three points be taken from that, the contest against Winterbourne on Easter Monday will be pivotal. Win that and Bassett will go into the final game of the year against Lydney needing a win to match Winterbourne's points total.

Whatever happens, a thrilling finish is guaranteed.
