Three On the Bounce

Recreation Ground, 3rd September 2011

It's now three wins in a row for Wootton Bassett Town after Dave Turner's side saw off Lydney Town, securing a relatively comfortable 2-0 victory against their Gloucestershire opponents.

Following a horrible first week of the season, Bassett seem now to have settled into a rhythm, with their triumph against Lydney meaning they have now scored 13 and conceded just twice during this promising run of matches.

The hosts began the day one place off the bottom of the table, with only a solitary point to show from their opening five games.

And Bassett made sure they would not be able to place a first notch in the win column.

Sam Collier, appearing thanks to Abingdon United being in FA Cup action - a competition in which he cannot feature for his new side having played for Bassett against Radstock, opened the scoring with his fifth of the season - and third from the penalty spot - in the opening period.

His scoring boots will need to be filled if Bassett are to stake a claim, as they intend to do, for one of the promotion places. And youngster Ethan Delaney continues to appear to be a prime candidate to do just that. Last season he impressed mightily, but the standard of his play was not reflected by his goals tally as he scored just three times in 41 appearances. However, his second half goal, which was well taken and put the result beyond doubt, means it has taken him just a handful of games to match that figure from last year.

The strike sealed the three points and means Bassett continue their slow rise up the table. Turner's side climbed into tenth, but can match second place Tytherington if both games in hand are won.
