Clanfield Comfortably Conquered

Radcot Road, 5th November 2011

Two first half goals and a stifling defensive display combined to secure Wootton Bassett Town all three points on the road at Clanfield.

Circumstances going into the game suggested Dave Turner's side would be in for a difficult afternoon. Bassett made the journey to Radcot Road on the back of a sloppy defensive display and understrength, with James Blake, Matt Bown and Mitch Wyatt missing, while their hosts had recorded a fine victory at Brimscombe and Thrupp in their previous match. However, victory was more comfortbale than would have been imagined.

On 26 minutes defender Craig Bowden stroked the ball home from the penalty spot to put the visitors ahead, and Ethan Delaney made the lead that bit more secure seven minutes later with his fifth goal of the campaign.

The second half was then seen out with another stoic defensive performance in the league. Despite conceding freely in cup contests so far this campaign, Bassett have well and truly shut up shop in Division One West, with just eight goals conceded in ten matches so far; remove the opening day anomaly at Malmesbury Victoria and it is just five conceded in the past nine games.

Bassett now lie sixth, five points off that elusive third spot. But with three games in hand, the Rylands Way outfit are perfectly poised. There is little time to relax though, with local rivals Cricklade Town set to visit next Saturday, and they will be smarting after a disappointing loss at Cirencester Town 'Development'.
