A Green and Pleasant Day at The Meadow

The Meadow, 22nd October 2011

Trips to sides recently promoted from the Gloucestershire County League haven't exactly been fruitful over the past few seasons for Wootton Bassett Town with losses to Lydney Town, Hardwicke and Slimbridge in the year immediately after their ascendancy to the Hellenic League. But Dave Turner's team put recent history behind them, recording a hard-fought, crucial 1-0 win against Brimscombe and Thrupp to keep in touch of third spot in Division One West.

In a very even first half, veteran forward Alex Green got the only goal of the game, and his first of the season, six minutes before the break.

The two sides continued to battle hard in the second period, but Bassett's staunch defence continued to show why it is the currently the second best in the division to preserve their third league cleen sheet. Just eight goals have been conceded in nine league games so far - three of which came in the disastrous season opener at Malmesbury; the team in the top half with the next best record is Purton who have shipped 16 in 11 contests.

The three points lift Bassett into sixth place, six points behind third place Cricklade Town - who lost at new leaders Tytherington Rocks today - with three games in hand.

Following last week's disappointment against Cirencester Town 'Development', the result was a welcome boost ahead of the difficult stretch of games which await.
