Better Late Than Never

It may have came later than anticipated, but Wootton Bassett Town finally opened their league account for the season. And they did so in supreme style, knocking off Tytherington Rocks - who came into the match with a 100% record, having also yet to concede - 5-1.

Sam Collier, who will shortly be departing for Southern League Abingdon United, was the star of the show as he bagged a hat-trick - moving him past the 50 goal mark in Bassett colours.

However, Dave Turner's side were forced to come from behind as the visiting Rocks took an early first half lead. A fine finish by Collier on the stroke of half time - his team more than deserving to find the back of the net after a much improved display in the opening 45 minutes - restored parity though.

Following Saturday's sloppy FA Cup defeat, Turner was staunch in his belief that it would take his side just one win to get the engines rolling and a stalled start to the season back on track.

He was wrong. In fact, all it took was a goal.

Shortly after the restart, Sam Packer - a player who has shined immensely during the opening couple of games - put his side ahead, and from there on out it was one-way traffic.

Collier netted from the penalty spot ten minutes later before he quickly hit his hat-trick goal with another assured finish.

Russell Driver then completed the rout with minutes remaining to cap off a fine night for the home side.

Here's hoping it will prove no false start and that Bassett are now firmly in gear for a promotion push.
