Passing the Test

Supermarine RFC Sports Ground, 19th November 2011

There seems to be no signs of the November blues afflicting Wootton Bassett Town as they recorded their fourth straight Hellenic League Division One West victory - their fifth consecutive triumph in all competitions - by seeing off near neighbours New College Swindon 2-0.

The character of Dave Turner's team shone through on a difficult afternoon, as they had to hold onto the slimmest of leads for the best part of an hour against a team chomping at the bit after their rampant 4-0 win against Purton last week. But, as has been the case throughout their fledgling league campaign, Bassett's defence held firm to preserve its fifth clean sheet, while a last minute penalty from Matt Bown sealed the points.

In a tight contest, the visitors had earlier taken the lead through midfielder James Turner, who fired home following a corner to net his second goal of the season.

Bassett remain fourth following their victory, but other results mean there is now distance between some of the sides immediately below, all of who have played at least two more matches. The gap between Turner's side and second place Old Woodstock Town now stands at six points and can be closed to just three if Bassett's remaining game in hand over them is won.

There is respite from league action next week for Bassett when they host Headington Amateurs, with a place in the quarter finals of the Challenge Cup on the line. The string of local derbies continues after that though, the month of December including the return trip to Cricklade Town and home contests against Purton and New College.
