Goals Galore Again, But It's Agony For Bassett

Barton Recreation Ground, 7th January 2012

Following on from their 13-1 win thumping of Trowbridge Town, Wootton Bassett Town were once again involved in a high-scoring affair as they visited Headington Amateurs. But this time there was to be no joy as Bassett fell to an agonising 5-4 defeat.

Headington - the reigning champions, who have struggled to match last season's success - began the afternoon in eleventh place, but were always going to represent a threat. And they demonstrated that strength in a crazy first half, storming into a 4-2 half time lead. Luke Cuff netted twice in the opening 17 minutes, while further goals from Shaun Pearce and Jay Hill ensured replies from Matt Bown and Connor Thompson were not enough to lift Bassett out of a deep hole.

Dave Turner's side got themselves back in a position to potentially take something from the game though. Alex Green and Mitch Wyatt both found the back of the net in the opening ten minutes of the second half. But Liam Morbey delivered a crushing blow thirteen minutes from time as he bagged the winner for Headington.

The loss sees Bassett fall back into fifth, behind a surging Cirencester Town 'Development'. Ten points now separate them from third spot, and there's scope to fall further down the table with ninth place Winterbourne United just two points back.

Prior to the match Dave Turner played down his side's chances of securing a return back to the Hellenic Premier Division. With Easington Sports, Tytherington Rocks and Old Woodstock Town next up - the latter two being away fixtures, there could be just pride left to play for come the end of January.
