Having been routed 5-1 by Wootton Bassett Town earlier in the season - a defeat which ended their early unblemished record, it was no surprise that Tytherington Rocks were talking of revenge prior to their Hellenic League Challenge Cup first round tie with Dave Turner's team. But this would not be exacted, as Bassett prevailed 6-5 on penalties after the two sides both scored twice during 120 minutes of exciting cup football.
Matt Bown continued his rich vein of form in front of goal, scoring both Bassett's goals - one in normal time and one during the extra half hour - to take him to six for the season, which means that Sam Collier has finally been supplanted at the top of the scoring charts. The classy midfielder now hs five goals in the past four games. He has been no stranger to cup goals either this season, having previously netted a brace against Milton United in the Floodlit Cup.
Bown opened the scoring in the first half, only for Justin Bishop to equalise late in the second. Bishop put Tytherington ahead in the second period of extra time, but Bown and Bassett hit back almost instantly to help send the tie to penalties.
Bassett's cup escapades continue in the next week and a half with trips to Pewsey Vale in the County Cup and to Reading Town in the Floodlit competition before league engagements are restarted with an away date against local rivals Cirencester Town 'Development'.
