Wootton Bassett Town started 2012 with a bang, thrashing sorry Wiltshire rivals Trowbridge Town 13-1 to lift themselves two places into fourth. Alex Green and Lee Bowen both came alive, leading the charge with five and four goals respectively.
Initially it seemed as though Bassett were suffering still from a New Year hangover when they went behind six minutes in. But Lee Bowen equalised a minute later, scoring his first of the season and from then onwards it was one-way traffic.
James Turner put the visiting team ahead on the quarter hour mark before Bowen made it three moments later. And by half-time Bassett were 5-1 in front, Green scoring his first of the afternoon 30 minutes in and Bowen then completing his hat-trick.
The goals came at an even greater pace after the restart. Ethan Delaney grabbed his ninth of the year two minutes after the restart, with Daryl Charman getting in on the action shortly after. Green then brought up his hat-trick with goals in the 60th and 69th minutes. Bowen's fourth made it double figures with 15 minutes and was the first of three goals within three minutes, Green supplying the other two to take his tally for the day to five. Finishing the rout with nine minutes remaining was Charman.
A postponed fixture for Cricklade and Easington Sports' draw with Old Woodstock Town ensured Bassett jumped up to fourth in the table. And third place Purton can once again be caught if Dave Turner's side win their games in hand after the Red House side lost on their travels against Winterbourne United.
Rest assured there won't be an easier fixture for the remained of the season. A tough trip to Headington Amateurs is up next, but Bassett will no doubt be in confident mood.
