Rocks Demonstrate They're Title Material

Hardwicke Playing Fields, 21st January 2012

Twice this season Wootton Bassett Town have beaten Tytherington Rocks. But the Hellenic League Division One West leaders - who are close to sealing the title despite it still being January - ensured they would win at least once against Dave Turner's side this year. And they did so emphatically, romping to a 4-0 triumph.

Unbeaten in their previous 16 matches and with an astonishing 32 goals in the last five, it was never going to be an easy day for Bassett. The visitors' task was arguably even harder given they made the journey without key defender Adam Corcoran, top scorer Matt Bown and attacking weapon Ethan Delaney, while Liam Edmondson could only make the bench due to injury.

To their credit they matched Tytherington for much of the first half, but could only hold out until the 36th minute when Marc Hughes sparked the hosts into life.

The lead was doubled three minutes after the restart as Nicholas Jones scored, and Jason Wood put the game beyond doubt just before the hour. Veteran Toby Colbourne, formerly of Corsham Town and Swindon Supermarine, added a fourth late on to condemn Bassett to a heavy defeat.

The loss sees Bassett slip three places in the table to eighth. Even more troubling for the team's fading promotion hopes is that only third place Cirencester Town Development and Brimscombe and Thrupp can be leapfrogged if Bassett's remaining game in hand is won.

After doing so well to claw their way back into contention by the end of November, a rough December and difficult January has seen that work undone.
