Wootton Bassett Town saw their recent surge in form ended as they were convincingly beaten 3-0 by in-form Winterbourne United.

After picking up eight points from the last available twelve, Bassett went into the match hoping they could do something to close the gap between themselves and the side currently occupying third place. But it was not to be.

During Bassett's promotion year, a victory against Winterbourne with a half dozen games remaining helped propel Dave Turner's team towards a spot in the Hellenic Premier Division. On this night the roles reversed. With victory, the hosts stretched their unbeaten league run to nine games and put themselves six points ahead of Purton, their nearest challengers for that vital third spot. And if Winterbourne finish there - second place is still not out of the question either - it should guarantee their elevation to step five.

For Bassett, now the race is to finish the best of the rest, with fourth a possibility though fifth a more realsitic goal.
