It's been three seasons since Wootton Bassett Town last recorded a victory in the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup, but two second half penalties from midfielder Matt Bown ensured they prevailed by the odd goal in three against Milton United to secure the club's safe passage through.
Throughout Dave Turner's tenure, the competition has not been prioritised, and for good reason. But after breaking their three year losing streak, there surely will be nothing wrong with having a go at adding some silverware in a cup that has produced a fair few surprises since its inception; indeed, Bassett were semi-finalists back in the 2002/03 season.
Milton, currently residing in a midtable position in Division One East, proved tricky hosts, and the game remained deadlocked at the break. But two confidently taken spot-kicks from Bown ensured that the hosts' lone goal proved not to be enough.
One further boost provided by the victory is that it demonstrated the character of Turner's squsd. The game came just over 48 hours after Saturday's lesson in football supplied by Shortwood United, yet there was little sign that the effects of having been given the runaround in that FA Vase encounter lingered.
